This week on Equity, we’re diving into some deals that stand out for a few reasons—some good, and some… well, we’ll see.

First, there’s the $80 million round for Story, a company aiming to mix web3 with AI and talent management. An investor claimed, “What Bitcoin did for money and finance, Story is doing for content and IP.” That could be true, but perhaps not in the way they think.

Next, Mary Ann tackles the confusing $450 million term sheet for Bolt. But is that real cash or just “marketing credits”? Mostly the latter. And the actual money? It’s from a web of private equity shell companies based in the Caymans and UAE. But hey, Ryan Breslow is making a return, which should clear things up, right?

We’ve got a new voice on the show, Margaux MacColl from DC, who talked about Balaji Srinivasan’s idea for a private island “technocapitalist college town” where only those disillusioned with the current world order are welcome. I joked it sounds like a cult, and while cults can be harmless in moderation, this one has me a bit concerned.

Of course, I couldn’t stop there, so I discussed two AI companies I covered this week that aren’t about enterprise LLMs. Reliant AI is focused on helping researchers, especially in pharma, analyze thousands of papers at once, which could be a game-changer for data scientists. BeyondMath is working with Formula 1 teams to create a “digital wind tunnel” for real-time, high-accuracy physics-based computational fluid dynamics simulations. When’s the last time ChatGPT made a race car faster?

Margaux wrapped up with the rising trend in defense tech acquisitions. Investors are starting to see this previously taboo market in a new light—now that it’s profitable. But don’t expect an AI-style bubble; this is a different space with its own standards for success and exits. Still, with over $100 billion invested since 2021, it’s impossible to ignore.
